Minella Study Hits All the Right Notes as March Approaches

Adam Nicol resisted the urge to run the promising juvenile hurdler Minella Studi again before the Cheltenham Festival. Nicol, an unbeaten jockey in three races, highlighted that the former John Nalen-trained three-year-old hasn’t had much rest since his debut in September 2024, which could impact his preparation for the big event.

At Cheltenham on Saturday, Minella Studi delivered an impressive performance, winning the Triumph Hurdle Trial by over six lengths, setting a strong precedent for the March championship. Nicholl, based in Seahouse on the Northumberland coast, commented, “He recovered very well, went home that night, eagerly ate up, and spent two days running and playing in the field. He didn’t seem tired from racing.”

He added, “What’s remarkable about him is his calm temperament—he doesn’t waste energy worrying about anything. Many people called me to say how impressive he looked and noted his great performance numbers on TV.” With an 11-pound weight increase to 138 pounds, he is likely the highest-rated horse in Britain.

While his next race is undecided, he might go straight to Cheltenham. Nicol explained, “John Nalen raced him twice last September and October and then gave him a break before racing him again in April. He’s been in steady training as he raced 84 days after his last run in Ireland, so he’s certainly been kept busy.”

Reflecting on the weekend, the former jockey said, “Ryan Mania only needed a few gentle prods to maintain speed throughout. It’s exciting—seeing him jump effortlessly while leading is a sight to behold.” Nicol also mentioned, “Some people have been trying to buy shares in Minella Studi, but luckily, owners Malcolm and Carol Humble don’t need to sell. They’ve already enjoyed wonderful days at Wetherby and Cheltenham, and we’ve had the chance to back Minella Studi at a favorable price.”

Fan Take: This news is thrilling for horse racing enthusiasts as it highlights a rising star with the potential to dominate the juvenile hurdler scene at Cheltenham. Minella Studi’s combination of talent, resilience, and calmness could bring fresh excitement and competition to the upcoming festival, making the sport even more captivating for fans.
