The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that defenseman Ty Murchison has been reassigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL). With key defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen set to start the 2025-26 season with the Flyers, Murchison will return to the Phantoms to continue developing his skills.

Murchison recently experienced his first NHL call-up, appearing in three games with the Flyers where he registered no points but contributed two blocks, five hits, and maintained a plus-1 rating. Standing 6-foot-2, the young defenseman showed potential during his initial stint with the Flyers.

Back with the Phantoms, Murchison aims to make a significant impact. This season, he has played 21 games, scoring one goal, adding three assists, totaling four points, with 30 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating.

Drafted 158th overall by the Flyers in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Murchison has appeared in 25 AHL games over two seasons, accumulating two goals, four assists, six points, 36 penalty minutes, and a plus-11 rating.

Fan Take: This move highlights the critical role of developmental leagues like the AHL in shaping future NHL talent. For hockey fans, Murchison’s continued growth with the Phantoms could signal the emergence of a promising defenseman who might become a key player for the Flyers down the line.
