  • Newcastle United ready to make January deal
  • Eddie Howe needs depth in defensive areas

According to Fichajes, Newcastle United are looking to recruit in the January transfer window, with Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso being the player they are eyeing.

Lo Celso’s future looks increasingly uncertain as the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder continues to struggle for consistency in La Liga, with fresh speculation surrounding a possible return to the Premier League.

The Argentina playmaker was once considered one of South America’s most technically gifted midfielders, but he has endured a difficult season so far, scoring just one goal in 13 league appearances.

Although this season’s results have not been overwhelming, Lo Celso’s underlying qualities are still widely admired across Europe.

Newcastle United ready to make January deal

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is considering adding new players in the January transfer window to improve the depth and quality of his squad.

Lo Celso’s transfer fee could be around €25m (about £22m), although many in the industry would consider this figure modest given his pedigree and international experience.

The Argentine could be a potential deal for Newcastle, who are looking to add creativity and depth to their midfield without breaching financial regulations, if they can rediscover the version of Lo Celso who once lit up Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain and shone at Tottenham.

During his time in north London, Lo Celso never truly established himself as a guaranteed starter, often oscillating between impressive performances and long-term injuries and slumps in form.

From Newcastle’s perspective, this makes any move a calculated risk. Howe’s side have already invested heavily in their midfield in recent periods and cannot afford to bring in new high-profile players who fail to make a lasting impact.

Lo Celso would be a short-term solution for Newcastle United’s midfield, but it is still a risky move and one that Howe and his recruiting team should avoid at this stage.

Especially after the injuries to Kieran Trippier, Dan Byrne and Emil Craft, reinforcements are needed more in the defensive department than in the midfield.
