Bild Makes Triumphant Comeback: ‘He’s Grown’ After Seven-Month Break

Last year’s Gun Runner Stakes champion, Bild, made a strong comeback on Thursday by winning a six-furlong second-level allowance race at the Fairgrounds Racetrack & Slots in New Orleans, Louisiana. The 3-year-old, trained by Wayne Catalano and owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, was racing for the first time since the Putt Day Mile (G2). Joined by jockey Jareth Loveberry, Bild showcased a polished performance that reflected the progress made during his time off.

Catalano, who observed the race, praised both the horse and rider. He noted, “Bild wobbled a bit leaving the gate, which may have been a blessing as we faced a pack of seven horses coming at us. I’m pleased with how it all worked out. Jareth did an excellent job remaining calm and allowing me to guide the strategy.”

Bild independently moved out from the gate to a four-wide position, then surged to the front at the quarter pole, ultimately winning by 1 1/2 lengths over Save the Trees with a Beyer Speed Figure of 89. Catalano hinted that Bild’s future races might focus on shorter distances, though no definitive plans have been set. “We’re thinking about keeping him to one turn—whether that’s a mile or seven-eighths. I’ll discuss with the owner and see how the horse feels before deciding,” he added.

The experienced trainer also observed that Bild has significantly matured physically since his last race, saying, “He’s definitely grown up and contributed a lot.”

Bild had earned a place in the 151st Kentucky Derby but was instead entered in the Pat Day Mile on the Derby undercard. His upcoming race, the Gun Runner Stakes on Saturday, marks his return nearly a year after he earned his first Derby point.
