Tyler Adams Faces 2-3 Month Recovery from Knee Injury, Set to Miss USMNT’s Last International Match Before World Cup

Tyler Adams, the American midfielder, has suffered a knee injury that has prematurely ended his season with Bournemouth. He is expected to be sidelined for two to three months, raising concerns about his participation in the final international squad before the World Cup selections.

Bournemouth’s manager, Andoni Iraola, confirmed on Friday that Adams had torn his MCL during an early encounter in the thrilling 4-4 draw against Manchester United. While the club suspected an MCL injury at the time, the extent of the damage was initially unclear.

“He will definitely be out for a significant period,” Iraola stated. “From our experience with MCL injuries, recovery usually takes around two to three months. Losing him is a significant setback as he is a crucial player; once we saw how the injury occurred, we feared it could be serious.”

Adams, who has struggled with injuries over the last three years, recently returned to form and has started 15 of Bournemouth’s 16 league matches this season. He only missed one match this month due to a suspension from a yellow card, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

“Tyler is incredibly important to us, and his contributions are quite unique,” Iraola remarked. “While we have options in the defensive midfield, finding a suitable replacement for him will be challenging.”

The 2022 US World Cup captain has not represented the national team since friendly matches against South Korea and Japan in September. He opted to stay in England during the October international window to support his pregnant wife, and also missed last month’s camp after sustaining a concussion in his last match against Bournemouth.

This knee injury could lead to Adams missing upcoming friendly matches against Belgium and Portugal in late March, which will be the team’s final training period before Mauricio Pochettino announces the World Cup squad in late May.

Although being out for a while does not preclude a player from participating in the World Cup, it is likely that if Adams is unable to return until late March, he will need at least six weeks to get back into Bournemouth’s lineup. If he maintains his health and form, he is very likely to be included in Pochettino’s 26-man World Cup squad.

In Adams’ absence this fall, Pochettino has utilized a defensive midfield partnership including Tanner Tessmann, Aidan Morris, Cristian Roldan, James Sands, and Sebastian Berhalter.

From a fan’s perspective, Adams’ injury not only affects his club but also raises concerns for the national team ahead of the World Cup. Fans will be watching closely to see how quickly he can return, as his presence is vital for both his club and the U.S. squad in the upcoming tournament.
