Aston Villa are almost certain to be in the market for a new goalkeeper in 2026, with speculation rife over Emiliano Martinez’s future. They have also been linked with Man City’s James Trafford, but a more established name could head to Villa Park instead.
Martinez remains linked with Manchester United, but could move to Saudi Arabia or MLS after the 2026 World Cup. Aston Villa are aware of this and are therefore already working to secure a replacement, with the player in question potentially being Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Aston Villa considering 2026 move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen
According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Aston Villa have made the first move seeking information regarding Ter Stegen’s potential transfer and the status of his fitness. The 33-year-old recently made his first appearance of the season following back surgery and performed well in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey win over Guadalajara.
Despite featuring in this match, Ter Stegen is not expected to be at Barcelona. Manager Hansi Flick has chosen Joao Garcia, signed from Espanyol this summer, as his starting goalkeeper, with former Arsenal stopper Wojciech Szczesny as his backup. So the door is open for Aston Villa to make a move.
Should Aston Villa sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen to replace Emiliano Martinez?
Ter Stegen, who has also attracted interest from Tottenham, has been in his best form in a decade and would be at the top of Aston Villa’s list when it comes to replacing Martinez. However, it is likely that a contract will not be sought until next summer as the German international will need to play in the second half of the season to secure qualification for next summer’s World Cup.
