NBA Hits Lakers’ Marcus Smart with $35,000 Fine for Flipping Off Referee in Thursday’s Clash with Utah

Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart was fined $35,000 by the NBA after making an offensive gesture toward an official during halftime of Thursday’s 143-135 victory over the Utah Jazz. Smart had received a technical foul near the end of the first half, which prompted the reaction. The 31-year-old guard ended the game with 17 points and four rebounds, hitting 5 of 9 three-point attempts in 28 minutes. Earlier in the season, Smart notched a season-high 26 points with 8-of-14 three-pointers in a 132-119 loss to the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Cup quarterfinals.

Smart started the last two games while Austin Reeves is sidelined with a calf injury. In his first season with the Lakers, Smart is averaging 10.6 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. He previously played for the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards last season after spending his first nine NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics.

This season, the Lakers hold a 19-7 record. Their upcoming schedule includes a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, an away game versus the Phoenix Suns, and a Christmas Day matchup against the Houston Rockets.

Fan Take: Marcus Smart’s fine highlights the intense emotions and pressure that come with high-stakes NBA games, especially for seasoned players. For basketball fans, it underscores the passion players bring to the court, while also reminding teams and officials about maintaining professionalism and sportsmanship in the sport.
