Could Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 Journey Extend Beyond Red Bull Racing?

Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future is expected to generate significant discussion after the 2026 season. The four-time world champion dispelled speculation over the summer about a possible high-profile switch to Mercedes by committing firmly to Red Bull for the 2026 season.

Verstappen, who is contracted with Red Bull until 2028, was heavily linked with a move to Mercedes until the Silver Arrows extended contracts with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Nonetheless, Verstappen’s future will remain under scrutiny, especially with upcoming regulatory changes that might disrupt the competitive landscape.

Whether Verstappen stays with Red Bull through 2027 will likely hinge on the team’s performance next season. Nico Rosberg believes Verstappen will wait to assess how the initial year of the new F1 rules for 2026 plays out before deciding on his future. The 2016 world champion told Sky Sports F1, “He will see how the season starts next year and then potentially switch to the team with the best car.”

Rosberg added, “He can choose and will be somewhat impatient. He wants to continue winning and secure his fifth world championship.” He cautioned patience, noting that “Red Bull could still be the dominant force next year.”

Verstappen has been strongly linked with Mercedes and Aston Martin over the last year. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has said he remains open to signing Verstappen in the future while standing by Russell and Antonelli. Meanwhile, a move to Aston Martin could appeal due to the chance to reunite with renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey. However, this would depend on Aston Martin’s competitiveness and whether Fernando Alonso retires when his contract ends in 2026.

Ferrari might have an opening, but McLaren, with reigning world champion Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on long-term deals, likely does not. Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle noted, “He can’t go to McLaren—they have two top drivers. Mercedes has George and Kimi, so where is the room for Verstappen? Ferrari?” He added, “Though it’s a tough call, Verstappen will likely be pursued by teams willing to create space for him.”

Fan Take: This ongoing saga is thrilling for racing fans, as Verstappen’s decision could dramatically reshape team dynamics and rivalries in F1. His move, or continued loyalty, will influence championship battles and the sport’s competitive excitement for years to come.
