Yankees’ Top International Prospect Joins Mets Amid Scouting Shakeup, Reports Reveal

Dominican shortstop Wandy Acigen, considered one of the top prospects for the 2026 international signing period, is set to join the New York Mets after initially agreeing to a deal with the New York Yankees, according to Baseball America. Acigen’s signing bonus is anticipated to be approximately $3.8 million. The 2026 international signing period begins on January 15th.

The Yankees and Acigen had a verbal agreement, a common but technically prohibited practice in international amateur free agency. In November, the Yankees parted ways with their international scouting director Donnie Roland, prompting Acigen to withdraw from the initial contract and seek a new deal, as reported by the New York Post. Yankees GM Brian Cashman acknowledged the difficult decision to replace Roland after his contract expired.

Acigen’s case is akin to a player reconsidering his options following a coaching change, a scenario not unheard of in baseball, though players breaking agreements, especially highly ranked ones like Acigen, is rare. For comparison, the Los Angeles released several contracts last offseason to free up funds for Aki Sasaki.

MLB Pipeline ranks Acigen, who is 16, as the second-best prospect for the 2026 period, highlighting his advanced offensive skills, power potential, and defensive versatility despite an average arm strength. He also showcases excellent speed with a 6.5-second 60-yard dash.

The international signing period is distinct from the submission period and primarily involves players under 25, mostly amateurs from Latin America. Teams have bonus pools with caps and the ability to redeem an additional 60%. For 2026, small-market teams receive the largest pools—over $8 million—with the Mets and Yankees each having $5.44 million. Therefore, most of Acigen’s bonus will come from the Mets’ pool.

The Yankees ended their relationship with Roland after years of underwhelming returns in international free agency, where only a few big bonuses translated into major league progress, emphasizing the high stakes and challenges in scouting and signing international talent.

Fan Take: This signing highlights the intense competition among MLB teams for top international talent and underscores the impact front-office changes can have on young prospects’ career paths. Baseball fans should watch closely, as Acigen’s signing could shift the balance of power in international scouting and influence the future of the game.
