Anderson Silva Challenges Ex-UFC Middleweight Knockout Artist of Chris Weidman to Thrilling Boxing Match

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva added another highlight-reel knockout to his legacy by defeating Tyron Woodley in the second round on the undercard of the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua fight last Friday. Following his victory, Silva challenged his longtime UFC rival Chris Weidman to a bout, but the anticipated boxing match set for November fell through due to Weidman’s injury. Meanwhile, former UFC standout Yoel Romero has stepped up, urging Silva to face him instead at Mega Clash.

Just a day after Silva’s win, Romero returned to the wrestling mat at age 48 and secured the interim light heavyweight title by defeating Patrick Downey. Although Romero is slated to compete in BKFC on February 7th, he expressed a strong desire to box Silva, emphasizing his willingness to compete across multiple sports. He pointed out Silva’s mention of Weidman, asserting that he himself is the rightful opponent Silva should face. During their UFC days, Silva avoided fighting Romero, who notably knocked out Weidman with a flying knee in 2016.

Despite turning 50, Silva remains in remarkable shape and shows no intention of retiring just yet. However, he has revealed plans to pursue a career outside the ring, aiming to become a police officer in California as a way to give back to the community.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for fight fans because it keeps Silva relevant and open to new challenges well into his 50s, promising more thrilling matchups. Romero’s challenge also spices up the prospect of combat crossovers, potentially bridging MMA, boxing, and bare-knuckle fighting, which can elevate the sport’s diversity and appeal.
