Red Sox Boost Lineup: Veteran Slugger Willson Contreras Traded from Cardinals, Reports Confirm

The Boston Red Sox have secured veteran power hitter Willson Contreras in a transaction with the St. Louis Cardinals, as reported by ESPN. The Cardinals will receive right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins along with minor league pitchers Yoyker Fajardo and Blake Eita, according to The Athletic. This marks the second major trade between these teams this offseason, following Boston’s deal last month where they sent young pitchers to St. Louis to cover for Sonny Gray.

Similar to Gray, Contreras agreed to waive his no-trade clause in exchange for an added $1 million in guaranteed money, per the Boston Globe. His contract extends through 2027 with a club option for 2028 and is valued at $42.5 million. The Cardinals will still cover $8 million of this amount, as reported by MassLive. Initially reluctant to leave St. Louis amid their rebuild, Contreras eventually chose to waive his contract to join the Red Sox, a team expected to contend by 2026.

This trade aligns Boston’s payroll closely with last year’s level, implying the team may need to adjust their finances should they want to retain third baseman Alex Bregman. At 34, Contreras, formerly a catcher, is expected to mainly play first base and designated hitter, roles he took on with the Cardinals in 2025. His addition provides Boston with a strong right-handed middle-of-the-lineup hitter, well-suited for Fenway Park due to his notable pull-fly hitting style. Contreras delivered a solid 2025 season.

Contreras posted a 123 OPS+ and 2.5 WAR over 135 games in 2025, maintaining impressive batting statistics that forecast continued high-level performance. A three-time All-Star, he has accumulated a 118 OPS+ and 29.2 WAR over parts of 10 MLB seasons, averaging 26 home runs and 31 doubles per full season. Defensively, he showed proficiency last year as a full-time first baseman for the first time.

Hunter Dobbins, 26, recorded a 4.13 ERA with 45 strikeouts across 61 innings in his rookie MLB season of 2025, which was cut short by a knee injury but he is expected to be ready for the next spring training. Prospect Yoyker Fajardo, ranked 23rd in Boston’s system by MLB Pipeline, is seen as a potential mid-rotation starter, while Blake Eita, who also played in Single-A in 2025, remains unranked.

In the 2025 season, Boston finished 87-73 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2021, though they were eliminated by the New York Yankees in the Wild Card Series.

Fan Take: This trade is a win-win, with Boston bolstering their lineup for a hopeful playoff run while St. Louis continues to reshape their roster for the future. Baseball fans should watch closely as Contreras’ presence could significantly impact the Red Sox’s offensive firepower and competitive edge going forward.
