UFC Boss Dana White Reveals He Advised Fighter to Land Just One Key Strike for a Title Opportunity

Islam Makhachev had a clear objective for his final fight after discussions with his UFC boss. Although the UFC reached out to him about a bout in January, he was not immediately given the chance to return. The manager of the welterweight champion mentioned two potential opponents for Makhachev in early 2026, one being Kamaru Usman — a top contender Makhachev has been eager to face and who regained popularity earlier this year. Another 170-pound fighter believes that had he achieved a particular goal last month, he would have been next in line to claim the championship.

Carlos Prates revealed he was told by UFC president Dana White that he would receive another title shot if he could defeat Leon Edwards in the first round. Despite many considering other challengers more deserving of Usman’s title, Makhachev has been advised to be cautious of Usman. Prates secured a significant win over Edwards at UFC 322 in New York and believes Usman will present Makhachev with his first title defense challenge. Prates shared that White had made this offer prior to his knockout victory and expressed concerns after a viral video showed him wearing Meta glasses at the weigh-in, fearing White would be upset.

In other news, Arman Tsarukyan, who has not yet fought for the interim UFC lightweight title, has focused on grappling matches between UFC competitors from different weight classes. Carlos Prates mentioned he was asked to team up with Tsarukyan but the UFC declined, despite his enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Fan Take: This news sheds light on the shifting dynamics amongst UFC’s top fighters and the strategic matchmaking that shapes the future of the sport. For fighting fans, these potential matchups and behind-the-scenes negotiations underscore the importance of timing and opportunity in the quest for UFC glory.
