Manny Pacquiao’s Weight Cut Backfires, Leading to Stunning Defeat Against 11-4-5 Journeyman

Manny Pacquiao experienced a surprising knockout early in his career during an upset loss to the boxer nicknamed the “Wanderer.” Throughout his remarkable career, Pacquiao has been celebrated as one of the greatest fighters ever, being the only boxer to win world titles in eight different weight divisions, showcasing his dominance over three decades. However, even top athletes face setbacks, and Pacquiao encountered his first major challenge at just 17 years old.

Earlier this year, Pacquiao made a notable comeback after a hiatus since 2021. At 47, he competed against Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title, delivering a performance that ended in a draw. Despite never officially dropping weight in his career, at 17, Pacquiao struggled to make the required weight before his fight with Rustico Torrecampo during just his 12th match. Because of this, Pacquiao had to wear heavier gloves than Torrecampo, who was considered a journeyman with an 11-4-5 record.

Though the fight was viewed as a step up for Pacquiao, he faced the reality that experience in the ring is crucial, as he was pushed against the ropes multiple times. After two intense rounds, Torrecampo landed a powerful left hook to Pacquiao’s jaw, knocking him out when Pacquiao lowered his head. The referee stopped the fight as Pacquiao was unable to stand properly.

Looking ahead, Pacquiao plans to return to the ring in 2026 to continue enhancing his legacy as a world champion boxer. There are ongoing discussions about a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather, and speculation that Pacquiao might challenge Laurie Romero for the WBA welterweight title.
