The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Board of Directors elected two new members for 2026 during their meeting on December 15. Walter S. Robertson Jr., from the law firm Steitz & Harbison PLLC, will continue serving as chairman of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for another year.

Robertson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to remain chairman and praised the dedication and generosity of the board members. He emphasized their collective mission to ensure certified aftercare programs provide Thoroughbreds with a safe, respectful, and fulfilling life after their racing days are over.

Joining the board in 2026 are Drew Fleming, President and CEO of Breeders’ Cup Limited, and Elliott Walden, President, CEO, and Racing Manager of WinStar Farms.

Drew Fleming has led Breeders’ Cup Limited since 2019, driving growth in global participation, gaming, media distribution, and strategic alliances. His leadership has expanded the organization’s international presence through initiatives like the Challenge Series and Global Pools, while also enhancing safety and integrity within the sport.

Elliott Walden, a third-generation jockey from Kentucky, is an Eclipse Award-winning former trainer known for guiding the 1998 Belmont Stakes winner, Victory Gallop. Since becoming President and CEO of WinStar Farms in 2010, Walden has managed a top-tier breeding and racing operation, famously including 2018 Triple Crown champion Justify.

These new directors will join the current board members, which include Tony Allevato, Craig Vandroff, Laura Barilaro, Donna Barton Brothers, Price Bell, Dr. Jeffrey Burke, Christina Blacker, Boyd Browning, Aidan Butler, Dr. Bonnie Comerford, Larry Connolly, Joe De Francis, Georgine Hale, Melissa Hicks, Jay Pribman, Walt Robertson, Dean Rothemier, Yvonne Schwabe, Mark Sindinger, Barbara Van Langendonk, and Rick Waldman.

After several years of valuable contributions, Madeline Auerbach, Tom Cannell, and Jack D’Amico will step down from the board at the end of 2025.

This article was initially published by Paulick Report on December 22, 2025, in the Horse Care section.

Fan Take: This leadership update is significant for horse racing enthusiasts because it highlights ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and aftercare of racehorses, an area crucial to the sport’s integrity and public perception. With experienced industry leaders like Fleming and Walden joining the board, the Alliance is well-positioned to enhance support systems for retired Thoroughbreds, ensuring the sport remains responsible and sustainable.
