Mets’ Jeff McNeil: Right-Handed Hitter’s Post-Trade Earnings Revealed in Report

Starting Monday, the Mets are reportedly interested in bringing in a right-handed hitter to balance their lineup, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. This move is seen more as a roster reconfiguration rather than a payroll change, as Jeff McNeil no longer plays an infield position and is now firmly established in left field.

The Mets recently added versatility to their roster by signing switch hitter Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million deal, with the ability to also play first base. However, the team remains keen on acquiring a right-handed hitter who could potentially cover first base as well.

The Mets did not re-sign Pete Alonso, another right-handed hitter and first baseman, who inked a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles earlier this month. Additionally, Mark Vientos, a right-handed hitter and primarily third baseman, has been added to the first base depth chart after hitting .233/.289/.413 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs over 121 games last season.

In other moves, the Mets acquired three-time All-Star right-handed second baseman Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo at the end of last month. Right-handed free agents like third baseman Alex Bregman and shortstop Bo Bichette remain top targets, though they may be offered longer contracts than the Mets are willing to commit to.

Fan Take: This strategic reshuffling by the Mets could signal a new era of balance and depth, which is crucial for competing at the highest level. For baseball fans, it promises an exciting season with a potentially more dynamic and versatile Mets lineup, shaking up the competitive landscape.
