Blue Jackets’ Triumph Sends Maple Leafs Tumbling to Bottom of NHL Eastern Conference

The day before the NHL entered a three-day break, the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Interestingly, it was Mason Marchment, a former Maple Leafs prospect, who scored twice on the power play to help the Columbus Blue Jackets secure a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

This outcome underscores a glaring imbalance. Toronto’s power play, which has netted just two goals with the man advantage in their last 10 games in December, was matched by a single former prospect. This ongoing struggle recently led to the dismissal of assistant coach Marc Savard, who had been in charge of the power play for a season and a half.

The last time the Leafs found themselves in last place this late in the season was 2015-16. That year ended with Toronto finishing last in the league but then winning the NHL Draft Lottery, allowing them to select current team captain and star Auston Matthews with the first overall pick.

However, the current scenario is quite different from that complete rebuild. The Leafs are now grappling with a crisis of confidence after a three-game winless road stretch in Washington, Nashville, and Dallas. Despite high hopes for a Stanley Cup run this season, the team is now searching for solutions.

The good news for Toronto is that all teams in the Eastern Conference are tightly clustered, with every team holding a winning percentage above .500. The Leafs sit just six points away from a playoff spot, and their 15-5-5 record suggests there is still plenty of time to turn things around. As 2026 approaches, the team faces a crucial challenge. They return to play Tuesday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins, offering a vital chance to climb out of last place in the conference.

Fan Take: This development matters deeply to hockey fans because it highlights how quickly fortunes can change, even for a franchise with strong expectations. The Leafs’ struggles and potential rebound could have ripple effects on the competitiveness and excitement of the Stanley Cup race this season.
