Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, is excited to announce the return of the “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby” auction series in 2026. This four-month event, starting January 1, 2026, features derby hat auctions sponsored by renowned milliner Sally Faith Steinman of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS®.
Now in its 14th year, the collaboration between MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends continues to raise funds for retired racehorses. All proceeds from the hat sales are generously donated to Old Friends by Sally Faith Steinman. Over the past auctions, 68 distinctive Derby hats have been sold, raising more than $46,000 to support the care of retired Thoroughbreds.
John Nicholson, president and CEO of Old Friends, expressed great enthusiasm for the longevity of this beloved tradition, highlighting gratitude toward Sally Faith Steinman and MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® for their creative and elegant contributions benefiting nearly 300 retired racehorses.
The auction runs monthly from January to Derby Day, with a fresh Derby hat design each month inspired by one of Old Friends’ retired horses. In 2026, featured horses include Big Brown, winner of the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness; Ashin Forward, a $3.4 million New York colt; I’ll Have Another, the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion; and Cosmic One, the first foal of legendary mare Zenyatta.
Sally Faith Steinman expressed pride in reviving the “Hat Off to the Horses” series to support retired champions living comfortably at Dream Chase Farm and Cabin Creek.
The hats will be available for auction through eBay for 10 days each month, with details posted on MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends’ websites. For assistance with bidding, interested buyers can contact Old Friends or MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® directly.
