Liverpool are reportedly monitoring the movements of Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.
The 26-year-old is currently one of the best defenders in Europe and football and could be a great signing for Liverpool. They have looked vulnerable at the back this season and need to improve in that area of the pitch.
In addition, Ibrahima Konate’s contract expires at the end of this season, but he has not signed an extension with the club. Liverpool will need to replace him properly.
Italians may be ideal for them. In addition to being a top-class defender, he is also excellent with the ball at his feet. When manager Virgil van Dijk decides to call it quits, Liverpool will need players like him in the future.
The 26-year-old has proven himself for both club and country. He has the quality needed to do well in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see if Liverpool can sign him.
Mick Brown says Liverpool are keeping a close eye on their defender.
“Bastoni is a player I’ve always really respected,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s a great defender and he’s been great for Inter Milan for a long time, so it’s no surprise that these types of clubs are paying attention to him.
“Liverpool are keeping an eye on him because they see him as a player who can improve on their current abilities.
“He would be a great asset for any club and is definitely a player I would recommend they sign.
“They don’t really know what’s going on with Konate. It’s still up in the air and Van Dijk hasn’t looked like his usual dominant self this season.
“So this is the type of deal that Liverpool will have to consider, because if they have to bring in players they have to be prepared for all possibilities.”
It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool decide to make a formal offer and sign him, given their interest. It will be difficult to convince Italian clubs to sell him. Bastoni is indispensable to them and they don’t want to lose him easily.
Inter Milan are likely to command a premium for the defender, meaning Liverpool will have to wait until the end of the season to sign him.
