UFC Fighter Endured 38 Stitches Following Devastating Grenade Attack Just Days After Loss on Christmas Eve

Seven years ago today, a UFC fighter experienced a particularly eventful Christmas Eve. The UFC’s 2025 event schedule wrapped up on December 13th, with the organization now on a holiday break before returning on January 24th at UFC 324. The holiday season is usually a time for fighters without January bouts to unwind, but that wasn’t the case for one UFC athlete in 2018, who faced a harsh defeat in the Octagon followed by a strange and dangerous incident away from the arena on Christmas Eve.

Alex Oliveira, who competed in both the welterweight and lightweight divisions, was known for bringing excitement every time he stepped into the cage. His most impressive run came during 2017-2018, where he lost just once in eight fights, securing knockout victories against Will Brooks and Ryan LaFlare, as well as submission wins over Tim Means and Carlos Condit.

Hoping to build on his success, Oliveira’s momentum was halted by Gunnar Nelson at UFC 231 on December 8, 2018. Despite a tough first round pounding, Nelson managed to submit Oliveira in the second round. The bout left Oliveira with 38 stitches across his forehead, but more trouble awaited him on Christmas Eve of that year.

While filling up his mother’s car with gas in his hometown of Tres Rios, Brazil, Oliveira witnessed a heated family argument. As he stepped in to help, a grenade was thrown in his direction amidst a chaotic scene involving guns, machetes, and knives. Splinters from the grenade struck his legs and feet, forcing him to undergo surgery to remove the fragments in a local hospital.

Since then, Oliveira has continued his fighting career, though not without more struggles. After leaving the UFC, he has suffered five losses in nine bouts and recently faced defeat once again on December 20, 2025, competing under the Fight Nation Championship in Montenegro. At 37 years old, Oliveira looks to find his form again in 2026 after earning five post-fight bonuses during his UFC career.

Fan Take: This story of resilience highlights the unpredictable and often harsh realities MMA fighters face both inside and outside the Octagon. For fight fans, Oliveira’s journey is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination that defines the sport, underscoring the dramatic life stories behind every bout.
