For Abolus, Christmas Soars to New Heights as Both a Dad and a Pilot

Just a year ago, Rodrigo Abols stepped onto the ice for his rookie season in Philadelphia, marking an unusual NHL debut as a 29-year-old Latvian with his wife and son watching from the stands. His journey was long and challenging, filled with perseverance and a sense of seizing what might have been his final opportunity to prove himself in professional hockey.

Before starting the season, Abols expressed gratitude for the chance to continue pursuing his dream. Now, his wife Paula and their 4-year-old son Alexi are celebrating their first Christmas with him as a full-time NHL player—something that was uncertain just a few months ago. While Paula and Alexi had returned to Latvia during training camp, Abols stayed behind, working hard and eventually earning a permanent spot with the Flyers by late October.

Paula made significant sacrifices for Rodrigo’s career, holding down the home front throughout the season, even as the family adjusted to life far from Latvia, often living out of hotels last year while moving between minor league affiliates. Abols highlighted the importance of having his family near now, especially with Alexi starting kindergarten and Paula receiving support back home.

Despite arriving at camp without much fanfare, Abols quickly emerged as one of the Flyers’ most impressive players. Coach Rick Tocchet played him in six of seven preseason games, impressed by his performance and resilience. General manager Danny Briere noted how Abols became a regular fixture, even as the team tried to manage his workload to keep him fresh.

Abols and Paula’s relationship goes back many years, having met before he was a teenager. He played youth hockey alongside his younger brother in Latvia, and eventually, he and Paula began their relationship, joking about the intertwining of family ties and hockey.

Heading into the holiday break, Abols was riding a hot streak with one goal and two assists in the last three games, contributing to the Flyers’ strong record. He plans to celebrate Christmas with his family in New York, maintaining a tradition they started even before their son was born.

Fatherhood has added new meaning to Christmas for Abols. He shared how seeing his son’s excitement and understanding of the holiday brings renewed joy and spirit, contrasting with years past when it was just the two of them.

Before joining the Flyers, Abols spent six of his first seven professional seasons playing in Sweden’s top league, the SHL. Most Christmases were spent away from home due to hockey commitments, making this season especially meaningful.

Last year was a tough adjustment for the family, with Paula experiencing burnout from constant travel and hotel stays. However, they have persevered, making strides toward Abols’ NHL aspirations.

Looking ahead, Abols will represent Latvia in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics. Paula may return to Latvia briefly before joining him in Italy to acclimate and avoid jet lag, ensuring she can enjoy her time there.

Young Alexi is just beginning to grasp the excitement of his father’s NHL career, thrilled to attend games and follow his progress. Abols cherishes these moments, watching his son grow smarter and more engaged with hockey, even amused by Alexi’s learning of team logos and playful commentary on opponents.

The support from Paula and Alexi has been invaluable to Abols, especially navigating the challenges of professional hockey far from home. Their presence provides comfort and motivation during a demanding schedule, helping him stay focused and positive.

Fan Take: Rodrigo Abols’ story is a powerful reminder that perseverance and family support are crucial in the pursuit of professional sports dreams. His journey adds a heartfelt narrative for hockey fans, emphasizing how dedication and personal sacrifice behind the scenes enrich the sport and inspire the next generation.
