Former Scottish winger John Robertson, a two-time European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest and scorer of the only goal in the 1980 final, has passed away at the age of 72. The Premier League club expressed their sorrow in a statement, calling him a “legend” and a “dear friend,” though the cause of death has not been revealed.

During his five-year international career, Robertson earned 28 caps for Scotland, including participation in the 1982 World Cup. He became an iconic figure at Nottingham Forest, playing a crucial role in their European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980. In 1979, when Brian Clough’s squad won their first European Cup, Robertson scored the only goal in the match against Malmö, and he also found the net in the 1980 final, leading to a 1-0 win over Hamburg.

Robertson started his football journey at Forest but concluded it with a stint at local rivals Derby. Nottingham Forest shared a heartfelt tribute: “Rest in peace, Robbo… our great man.”

This news is significant for soccer fans as it marks the loss of a true legend who shaped the history of a beloved club. Robertson’s contributions to the game serve as a reminder of the passion and excitement that defines football, inspiring future generations of players and supporters alike.
