Tyler Soderstrom Secures Seven-Year, $86 Million Deal with the Athletics

The Athletics have secured a major commitment from Tyler Soderstrom, signing the 24-year-old left fielder to a seven-year contract worth $86 million, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The agreement, announced on Christmas Day, also includes an eight-year club option with an escalator, potentially raising the total value to $131 million, making it the largest contract in franchise history.

This deal is a significant gift to both A’s fans and Soderstrom, reflecting the organization’s dedication to retaining its young core. Manager Mark Kossais recently highlighted the team’s plan to keep their rising stars together, naming Soderstrom as a key part of that strategy, especially with his anticipated breakout season in 2025.

A’s executive Coetzee echoed this commitment during the MLB Winter Meetings, explaining that unlike previous promising groups from 2017 to 2019, the current team has the resources and vision to sustain their core players. He emphasized the need for mutual agreement between the team and players to make these plans successful.

Soderstrom’s new deal caps off a notable season where he successfully transitioned from first base to left field, impressing both offensively and defensively. In his third major league season, he posted a .276 batting average with 25 home runs and 93 RBIs. His stellar defense earned him a nomination as an American League Gold Glove finalist. Originally drafted as a catcher in 2020, Soderstrom’s shift to the outfield allowed Nick Kurtz to take over at first base and ultimately capture the AL Rookie of the Year title.

With Soderstrom’s future secured, the Athletics are now expected to focus on extending contracts for other promising young players on their roster.

Fan Take: This landmark contract not only signals the A’s commitment to building around their young talent but also highlights a trend in baseball where teams prioritize long-term stability over short-term gains. For fans, it represents hope for a competitive future and could inspire other franchises to invest boldly in their emerging stars.
