Nikola Jokic Sets NBA Record with Stunning 56-Point Triple-Double vs. Tigers

The NBA’s festive schedule concluded with an exciting five-game series on Christmas Day. The Denver Nuggets narrowly triumphed over the Minnesota Timberwolves, 142-138 in overtime, largely propelled by Nikola Jokic’s remarkable triple-double of 56 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists, alongside a standout performance from Anthony Edwards.

Edwards put up a strong fight with 44 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals, a crucial game-tying basket with just 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation, and even an ejection. This marked Edwards’ fifth game of the season scoring over 40 points, with 24 of those points coming in the final quarter and overtime. His clutch shot late in regulation forced overtime, erasing a 15-point deficit for Minnesota. Unfortunately, Edwards was ejected after receiving his second technical foul with 20.5 seconds left, preventing him from playing in overtime.

On the other side, Jokic achieved his 179th career triple-double in this win. The three-time MVP began strong, scoring 18 points in the first quarter and securing a triple-double by midway through the third. He dominated overtime, scoring 18 out of Denver’s 27 points, finalizing an unprecedented 55/16/15 stat line. Jokic’s 56 points place him third on the NBA’s all-time Christmas Day scoring list, trailing only Bernard King’s 60 and Wilt Chamberlain’s 59 points. He has also recorded a triple-double in each of his past four games against Minnesota, including a career-high 61 points last April, showing a consistent dominance over the Timberwolves.

Peyton Watson, a Nuggets guard, commented after the match, “It’s unbelievable. We’re watching history every night.” This victory pushes Denver to a 22-8 record, sitting 2.5 games behind Minnesota for second place in the Northwest Division. They hold third place in the Western Conference, trailing the San Antonio Spurs by one game and the Oklahoma City Thunder by 3.5 games.

Fan Take: This thrilling matchup showcased the incredible talent and competitiveness in today’s NBA, highlighting why Christmas Day games remain a can’t-miss event for basketball fans. Jokic’s historic performance not only cements his legacy but also underscores how individual brilliance can elevate the excitement and profile of the sport.
