John Daly, 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain? He’s throwing his hat into the ring

Will John Daly become US Ryder Cup 2027 captain?

The 59-year-old two-time major champion recently threw his hat into the ring during an interview with one of his sponsors, Hard Rock Bets. He called his biggest regret never being able to compete in a Ryder Cup, despite winning two major tournaments.

“My ancestors are from Cork and I want to be a captain one day,” Mr Daly said. The 2027 Ryder Cup is scheduled to be held at Adare Manor in Ireland. But even Daly isn’t holding his breath in hopes of getting a nod.

John Daly of Dardenelle, Arkansas, hits the ball into the 10th fairway during the first round of the 2025 Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club on Thursday, June 19, 2025 in Akron, Ohio.

“But that’s not to say it’s never going to happen. But Tiger would be an unbelievable captain. I would love to be vice-captain or be a part of it in some way.”

“I think I should have been on two teams, but that didn’t happen. I didn’t play well enough, so I couldn’t be on that team. But being in the Ryder Cup, whether it’s as co-captain or just being there, is something I’d love to do. I’d love to see it and put my input in and help the players. I think it’s going to be an experience that I’ve dreamed of ever since winning the 1991 PGA Championship.” ”

The Daily can’t do any worse. The U.S. has lost two straight Cup games and 11 of the past 14. Maybe he’ll cut Team USA loose. In fact, the Tiger Daily ticket may be popular enough for the 2028 presidential election.

Even Daly acknowledged that his chances were slim to none, but offered an interesting take on why the U.S. struggled the first two days at Bethpage Black.

“I don’t think you should combine sluggers and short hitters. I think the short hitters I’ve always seen are grinders. I’d rather have guys who can hit as well as I can,” he said. “Especially with the alternative shot. They’re going to be a little bit behind some guys, but you take Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, they’re not the longest hitters in the world, but, well, they got better when they played the alternative shot.”

“When they were partners, they got along really well. They hit it off with each other, they beat each other up. But when you have Bryson DeChambeau and a short hitter, you can’t beat Bryson away. Only the long hitters can do that. I think that was a mistake, but other than that, hats off to the team for coming back like they did in the singles match. It was probably the biggest comeback ever, and God bless them.”

Daly also said European teams invest more in the Ryder Cup than American teams, and for good reason.

“They take the backside, they take a week off, they all go to practice and get used to the ball better,” Dailey said. “I think our team needs to be more like a family and really protect the United States of America, the flag. We don’t have to worry about what we’re going to get out of it. Personally, I just want the Ryder Cup trophy.”
