Penguins Update: Risotto Returns to Full Action in First Practice Post-Vacation

The Pittsburgh Penguins experienced a much-needed three-day holiday break, providing them with time to regroup after a challenging stretch where they’ve only secured one win in their last 10 games, standing at 3-5-4 this December. This pause has also helped some injured players start their recovery. Centers Blake Lizotte and Evgeni Malkin, both sidelined since December 9, were seen skating on Saturday — Malkin solo ahead of practice and Lizotte fully participating during team drills, filling in as the fourth-line center.

The Penguins have struggled significantly without these key players, marked by a 1-5-4 record in games without Malkin and 1-5-3 since Lizotte’s injury. Lizotte looks set to make a return, possibly as soon as Sunday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, a boost for the team that has recently faced defensive difficulties. Head coach Dan Muse emphasized Lizotte’s energetic play and how his defensive efforts and puck management often spark momentum for the team, making him highly valued in the locker room.

Lizotte is expected to rejoin the fourth line, where he contributed positively before his injury by creating chances and steering plays on both ends of the ice. Muse highlighted how lines like Lizotte’s can generate momentum through their defensive work and aggressive forechecking, setting up offensive opportunities. Regarding Malkin, Muse reported no new updates but noted Malkin remains committed to recovery.

On December 23, despite a 6-3 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Penguins maintained mostly consistent lines and combinations with Lizotte back, replacing Kevin Hayes, while the top nine forwards and defensemen stayed the same.

The December slump was timely addressed by the holiday break, as the Penguins remain just three points shy of a playoff spot and slightly above last place in the Eastern Conference. The team hopes the rest period allows them to reset and build on the positive energy from their shootout win against the Montreal Canadiens on December 21, despite some tough moments in the loss to Toronto. Forward Justin Brazeau acknowledged the challenge of bouncing back from setbacks but reassured that the team’s spirit remains intact, crediting veteran Sid Crosby’s leadership for maintaining calm and focus.

Sidney Crosby also reached an impressive milestone by surpassing Mario Lemieux as the Penguins’ all-time scoring leader, a significant achievement for the franchise.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for hockey fans because it signals potential turning points for a struggling but resilient team. The Penguins’ ability to recover injured stars like Malkin and Lizotte not only inspires hope for better performance but also highlights the importance of team dynamics and leadership in navigating tough seasons.
