Sovereignty Secured for 2026 Campaign: The Ultimate New Year’s Gift Ahead!

Sovereignty, a Kentucky Derby (G1) champion and a homegrown talent from Godolphin, is set to return to trainer Bill Mott at Payson Park, Florida, early next year to gear up for his four-year-old campaign, according to Godolphin’s Michael Banahan. Banahan shared in an interview with FanDuel Racing’s Cayton Breder that Sovereignty is currently in Kentucky at Keeneland, showing strong condition. The plan is to bring him to Payson Park soon to resume training with Mott and continue his progression, with hopes that the upcoming season will match the success of the current one.

Sovereignty was unable to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar last November due to a fever and has not officially trained since then. However, Mott anticipates the Into Mischief colt’s arrival at the Florida facility within about a week. Describing the return as a “nice New Year’s gift,” Mott commented following Knightsbridge’s win at the Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

While no official return race has been confirmed, the Dubai World Cup (G1) on March 28 is considered a likely early target. This race holds special significance as Mott won its inaugural running in 1996 with Cigar, and the event was established by Godolphin owner Sheikh Mohammed. Sovereignty’s impressive record includes victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes (G1), and Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. This year alone, he competed in six races, winning five, placing second once, and earning $5,692,020.

Fan Take: Sovereignty’s comeback is highly anticipated by horse racing fans, as he represents a rare blend of talent and pedigree that can elevate the sport’s profile on the global stage. His participation in major events like the Dubai World Cup could ignite international excitement and showcase the continued dominance of Godolphin in elite racing circles.
