Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick warned of a tough and “unpleasant” practice session following the team’s humiliating defeat on Christmas Day. However, after a lengthy practice and team meeting on Saturday, the Lakers appear to be recovering from their three-game losing streak.

Redick was notably calmer and accepted some responsibility for his harsh treatment of players following the loss to the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN. “I always start by looking at myself first,” said Redick, now in his second season coaching the Lakers. “It’s easy to blame someone else or make excuses, but we have to face the uncomfortable truth and get everything out in the open,” he added.

Despite the blunt talk, the coach described Saturday as a day of “recalibration and reconnection,” with productive discussions between staff and players. Several Lakers, including Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton, shared a hopeful outlook that the team would rebound after the meeting.

This was quite different from Redick’s comments on Thursday, when he criticized the team’s effort and motivation after the 119-96 defeat to the Rockets, stating, “Right now, we don’t care enough. That’s what bothers me — the lack of professionalism.” He warned that players need to make a choice to improve, or things would continue as they are, promising the Saturday practice would be “uncomfortable” and that the team cannot perform like this for the rest of the season.

Redick has expressed particular dissatisfaction with the team’s defensive struggles, which worsened in recent losses including a poor defensive showing in a loss to the Phoenix Suns and again on Christmas Day where the Lakers conceded 48 points in a quarter. This defensive collapse partly fueled Redick’s frustrations.

Ayton, the team’s leading rebounder, acknowledged his own lack of focus after grabbing just two rebounds in the Rockets game and vowed to hold teammates accountable in future matches.

Although the Lakers started the season strong, recent weeks have shown signs of decline. They currently hold a 19-10 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference. This challenge is compounded by Austin Reeves’ injury, but there is still ample time to regroup. The Lakers aim to bounce back in their upcoming game against the Sacramento Kings, who are struggling with an 8-23 record. A strong win would signal the team’s resilience following Redick’s stern message.
