Three Diamonds Farm’s Anegada narrowly edged out Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) winner Final Gambit to claim victory in the $125,000 Last Hurley Stakes for 3-year-olds at Turfway Park on Saturday. Ridden by top Holiday Meat jockey Walter Rodriguez for trainer Mike Maker, Anegada completed the 1 1/8 mile race in 1:50.72. This marked the Midshipman gelding’s second win, following his success in the Hawthorn Derby on October 5th.

In a strong start, the 33-1 long shot Fountain Run led the pack of seven riders into the first turn, covering the quarter mile in 24.34 seconds and the half in 48.34 seconds. While Fountain Run maintained the lead, Rodriguez positioned Anegada along the rail in sixth place, about eight lengths behind. Approaching the quarter pole, Rodriguez guided Anegada to the outside, moving up six spots at the top of the stretch. Anegada took the lead by the eighth pole but had to fend off a fierce late surge from the popular Final Gambit, who came into the race with 11 wins and 10 losses. In the final strides, Anegada held his ground, keeping Final Gambit from overtaking him.

The third place went to Energize, finishing 3¼ lengths behind, followed by Urban Planner, California Burrito, Fountain Run, and National Law. Starting as an 8-1 outsider, Anegada rewarded his supporters with an $18.72 payout. With this victory, Anegada earned $75,760, raising his career earnings to $322,039 and improving his record to 14 wins, 3 losses, and 2 seconds. Bred by Leonard Supchak in Kentucky, Anegada is out of Love Cove, a mare by Not For Love.
