Canadians Urged to Focus Fire on Gritty Flames’ Offensive Line

A reporter from The Athletic recently shared an article highlighting one player each NHL team should pursue following the holiday trade freeze. For the Montreal Canadiens, Arpon Bass recommends targeting Blake Coleman, a forward from the Calgary Flames.

Bass points out that while the Canadiens secured center Phillip Danault from the Kings just before the freeze, they still have valuable trade assets available. Coleman is known for his hardworking style, penalty killing, power play capabilities, and Stanley Cup-winning experience. Importantly, he has one year remaining on his contract, similar to Danault, Brendan Gallagher, and Josh Anderson.

As the Canadiens continue to improve, Bass believes Coleman would be a strong addition to their middle six, especially given his versatility in playing multiple forward positions. His veteran presence could also serve as a valuable mentor for the team’s younger players.

This season, Coleman has contributed 11 goals, seven assists, and 18 points in 38 games with the Flames, alongside 94 hits and a plus-11 rating. At 34 years old, his all-around skills and leadership make him an attractive option for a Canadian team aiming to keep progressing. However, acquiring him would likely require the Canadiens to expend significant assets, as Coleman fits the mold of a player sought after by teams with championship aspirations.

Fan Take: This potential move is exciting for Canadiens fans because adding a seasoned, versatile player like Blake Coleman could provide the experience and grit needed to elevate the team’s playoff chances. It also signals a broader competitive shake-up in the NHL, where savvy trades post-freeze can dramatically alter team dynamics and fan expectations.
