The Columbus Blue Jackets rallied in the third period, scoring two goals within just over a minute to secure a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday, marking their second consecutive win. Kirill Marchenko scored twice, including a key goal with 3 minutes and 19 seconds remaining to break the 2-2 tie. Ivan Provorov also scored to level the game, while Cole Schwinger added an empty-net goal. Denton Matichuk and Sean Monaghan each contributed two assists, and goalie Jet Greaves stopped 24 shots.

For the Islanders, Max Shabanov and Bo Horvat found the net. David Rittich made 31 saves but ultimately could not hold the lead, giving the Islanders their first loss on a two-game road trip ending in 2025. Marchenko opened the scoring with a breakaway early in the first period, and Shabanov responded with a deflected goal late in the period. The second period saw a controversial moment when Matt Barzal was penalized and ejected following a major penalty for a high chop against Mason Marchment, resulting in a 3-on-4 power play for Columbus that they failed to capitalize on. Horvat put New York ahead mid-second period with his first goal after returning from injury, but Columbus fought back with Provorov’s equalizer and Marchenko’s go-ahead goal, followed by Schwinger sealing the victory.

Looking ahead, the Islanders will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, while the Blue Jackets travel to Ottawa on Monday.

Fan Take: This thrilling comeback by the Blue Jackets highlights the unpredictable and exciting nature of hockey, reminding fans why every game counts in the race for playoff positioning. The match’s intensity and momentum swings could signal a turning point for Columbus this season, potentially shaking up the dynamics of the league.
