Golden Knights Stumble Against Minnesota 5-2, Stand at 1-1 with One Draw on Home Turf

The Minnesota Wild dominated the Las Vegas Golden Knights with a 5-2 victory at T-Mobile Arena on Monday night. The Golden Knights fell behind quickly, trailing 2-0 by the end of the first period and 5-0 within seven minutes into the second. This loss marks Las Vegas’s fifth defeat in their last six games, bringing their record to 1-1-1 in the current four-game home stretch.

Minnesota opened the scoring early with Marcus Johansson finding the net just 26 seconds into the game, followed by Matt Boldy’s goal late in the first period. The Wild continued their momentum early in the second period when Jared Spurgeon scored 26 seconds in, with Brock Faber and Joel Eriksson Ek adding two more to cement the Wild’s lead. Although Brayden McNabb and captain Mark Stone managed late goals for Vegas, they couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Vegas goalie Carter Hart allowed five goals on just 12 shots before being replaced by Akira Schmidt, who stopped all 15 shots he faced. The Golden Knights also faced adversity when center Thomas Hertl was ejected early in the first period for a dangerous boarding penalty, compounding difficulties as key players Jack Eichel and William Karlsson were already sidelined with injuries. Captain Mark Stone acknowledged the challenge but urged his team to play more cohesively both offensively and defensively.

The Golden Knights struggled offensively, recording a season-low 16 shots on goal, a stark drop from their usual performance averaging over 30 shots per game. Despite the rough night, Schmidt’s strong performance in relief is promising as the team looks ahead to their next game against the Nashville Predators on New Year’s Eve.

Las Vegas now finds themselves just one point behind the Pacific Division leaders, the Edmonton Oilers, and the third-place Anaheim Ducks, keeping the playoff race tight despite recent setbacks.
