UFC Grappling Showdown: Arman Tsarukyan Faces Shara Magomedov in Stunning Upset

Two current UFC fighters recently competed in a submission-only grappling match. Arman Tsarukyan, who is aiming for the UFC lightweight title, has been active in other competitive formats despite his main goal. Although he has been sidelined from immediate title contention following the announcement of an interim title fight headlining UFC 324, Tsarukyan is expected to be ready to compete by January 24th if needed and made a return on December 30th. In his second grappling contest that month, he faced a fiercely determined opponent.

On December 30th, tensions rose between Tsarukyan and Shara Magomedov ahead of their grappling showdown. When the match began, both fighters aggressively pursued each other. Magomedov successfully countered Tsarukyan’s initial takedown attempt and gained control early by getting behind him. Tsarukyan managed to stand back up but spent several minutes trying to maneuver Magomedov to the ropes. Magomedov’s tactic of staying with his back against the ropes was effective until Tsarukyan lifted and slammed him down, executing several takedowns during the six-minute round. Because the match was submission-only and no one secured a submission, no winner was declared, despite Tsarukyan clearly dominating with Magomedov mostly defending.

Leading up to the match, the stakes went beyond bragging rights. Magomedov demanded that if he lost, Tsarukyan would have to buy him an apartment in Armenia, the location of their duel. Tsarukyan, facing a significant size disadvantage, wagered a UFC middleweight Rolex watch on himself winning. Ultimately, with no victor declared, these high-stake bets remain unresolved.

Fan Take: This grappling contest highlights how UFC stars like Tsarukyan are expanding their skills and competitive horizons outside the Octagon, providing fans with fresh and intense matchups. The high stakes and fierce rivalry add an exciting layer to the sport, showing the passion and bravado that drive fighters beyond just UFC wins, enriching the broader fight culture.
