The Detroit Red Wings have sent forward John Leonard back to their AHL team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, as Patrick Kane prepares to return from injury, limiting available spots on the roster. Leonard gave a strong effort to remain with the Red Wings, tallying four points in seven NHL games, including a three-game point streak. This marked his first NHL action since playing with the Arizona Coyotes during the 2023-24 season. Over parts of five NHL seasons, the 27-year-old has accumulated 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists) across 77 games.

Before his call-up, Leonard was among the top forwards in the AHL, netting 19 goals and contributing 10 assists for 29 points in just 20 games with the Griffins this season. He ranks eighth in the league in overall points, second in points per game, and leads the league in game-winning goals. Leonard’s standout performance earned him the AHL Player of the Month for November after scoring 16 points in 10 games. In his sixth professional year, Leonard also shone during last season’s playoffs, registering 14 points in 18 games and helping the Charlotte Checkers reach the Calder Cup Final.

With Kane’s return, Leonard will go back to Grand Rapids, where he is expected to remain a key offensive player and continue to be one to watch for future NHL chances.

Fan Take: Leonard’s strong showing highlights the depth of talent in the AHL and the importance of player development for NHL teams. For hockey fans, Leonard’s journey underscores the excitement and potential in the minor leagues, reminding us that impactful NHL careers often begin far from the spotlight.
