Sixers Rookie VJ Edgecombe Shines, Clinches Overtime Victory Over Grizzlies with Game-Winning Shot

The Philadelphia 76ers seem to have found a gem in rookie VJ Edgecomb. The third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft delivered a clutch performance by sinking the game-winning three-pointer in overtime against the Memphis Grizzlies, snapping Philadelphia’s six-game losing streak. The 20-year-old finished the game with 25 points, putting up five points by halftime.

Edgecomb has shown impressive shooting efficiency, boasting a 61.9 percent field goal percentage and 55.6 percent in critical moments. Plus, the Sixers outscored their opponents by 43 points during the 75 minutes he was on the court. This wasn’t Edgecomb’s first game-saving moment either.

The victory was bolstered by standout performances from Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, each scoring 34 points. Embiid also contributed 10 rebounds, eight assists, and two blocks, while Maxey added 12 assists and two steals. Together with Edgecomb, they accounted for scoring or assisting on 40 of Philadelphia’s 51 baskets.

Despite it seeming like it would be Ja Morant’s night—where the All-Star guard tallied 40 points on 16-of-22 shooting and nearly carried Memphis to an overtime win—Edgecomb stole the spotlight.

Another rookie making waves was Cedric Coward, the 11th pick in the draft, who put up 28 points, 16 rebounds, and four assists, signaling a promising rookie season. Fans can likely expect to see both Coward and Edgecomb in the NBA spotlight for years to come.

Fan Take: This breakthrough performance by Edgecomb highlights the impact rookies can have right from the start, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the league. It’s a reminder that the future of basketball is bright, with new stars ready to redefine the game and keep fans engaged.
