Mike Brown Calls Out Knicks’ Defense After Spurs Defeat: “We Lacked Physicality”

The Knicks kicked off their game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night with a season-best 45 points in the first quarter and held a lead of up to 19 points. However, despite their strong start, they lost a close game, 134-132. The Spurs dominated the fourth quarter, scoring 41 points, including 12 from former St. John’s standout Julian Champagnie, who nailed a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Champagnie set a Spurs record by sinking 11 three-pointers and led all scorers with 36 points.

Postgame, Knicks head coach Mike Brown reflected on the loss, saying it wasn’t a big failure but admitted San Antonio outplayed them in many ways. He credited Mitch Johnson and other Spurs players for their effort and highlighted Champagnie’s impressive shooting and ability to capitalize on defensive lapses. Brown expressed disappointment in his team’s defense against Champagnie, noting they showed little respect for him and failed to contain him in transition.

The Spurs converted 32 of 40 free throws, while the Knicks made 18 of 20, with Brown acknowledging some of the free throws came late in the game but still spotlighting the significant disparity in free throw attempts. He speculated that the Knicks’ offense might not have been aggressive enough to draw fouls and vowed to review the game film to understand the issue better.

Brown also addressed the team’s overall defensive struggles, emphasizing the need to avoid reaching and to defend with physical commitment without fouling. He stressed the importance of sustained physicality and a defensive sense of urgency, lamenting that the Knicks have yet to maintain this level throughout a full game this season. Brown warned that their inability to stay physical and avoid fouls, combined with weaknesses in transition defense, will hurt them if unaddressed as the season progresses.

For the Knicks to meet their long-term goals, Brown explained, they must improve their physical defense. New York’s next chance to turn things around comes Thursday night at home against the Atlanta Hawks.

Fan Take: This game highlights the crucial importance of consistent defense and disciplined play at the professional level. For basketball fans, it’s a reminder that exciting scoring runs alone can’t guarantee victory—teams must also master physicality and mental toughness to prevail in tight contests.
