Manchester United are in the market for a potential signing and could embark on a raid for a double full-back as Ruben Amorim gets serious about his job at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs. Wolves draw sparks controversy over Ruben Amorim

2025 was Manchester United’s worst ever Premier League result, reaching the Europa League final only to be defeated, and with some promising signs towards the end under Amorim. In any case, they would expect things to improve in 2026.

Fittingly, the Red Devils ended the year with a home draw against Wolves, highlighting the team’s thinning depth and the limitations they face within the much-maligned 3-4-2-1 system that was deployed in a fixture that delighted the visitors more than most expected.

For many, the formation utilized leads to a predictable pattern of play in breaking down the opposition, but having the central defender play a supporting role in midfield is something not all of Manchester United’s supporters are too keen on.

With other teams, including Chelsea, choosing to change their minds about their managers, Amorim seems safe for the time being, but Andoni Iraola has been tipped to take his place at Old Trafford should the stalemate against Old Gold continue.

Changing coaches is a strategy that doesn’t always pay off, but that seems to be why INEOS have remained loyal to those in charge. However, Manchester United spent over £225 million in the summer, so results are expected.

Given the January deadline, Amorim could be given some support as the Red Devils ramp up their recruitment efforts.

Isa Alao

According to MailSport, Manchester United are in internal discussions about signing Sporting star Salvador Vulopa, who would primarily play as a right-back or winger in a trade.

Meanwhile, they have submitted a £450,000 bid for Sheffield Wednesday prodigy Esa Alao, who has attracted interest from Liverpool as well, with him likely to be a long-term project at left-back, potentially overtaking Patrick Dorg in the future.

Diogo Dalot reveals Manchester United players are ‘aware’ of Bruno Fernandes’ injury

The captain pulled out of the defeat to Aston Villa with an apparent hamstring injury.

Of course, this could be an indication that Amorim is still highly favored at the club despite recent reports. His preference for wing-backs, rather than attackers providing width, is the cornerstone of his system.

Vulopa, on the other hand, would be a more natural fit on the right flank than someone like Amad Diallo. He has two goals and one assist in his first six games with the Portuguese giants and could be allowed to move up into a more natural role upon his return.

Alao has made three appearances for Sheffield Wednesday this season, but with points deducted it looks like he will be eliminated from the club, so financial difficulties could pave the way for him to leave.
