Nafeesa Collier Out for the 2026 Unrivaled Season Following Ankle Surgery

Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier is set to miss the entire 2026 Unrivaled season and might even miss the start of the WNBA season. According to ESPN, Collier needs surgery on both ankles and is expected to be out for four to six months. After consulting with medical professionals, the WNBA All-Star is scheduled for surgery in New York next week.

Collier expressed her disappointment on Instagram, stating, “I am heartbroken to share that I will be missing a season of Unrivaled. I’ve fought hard to return, but my doctors advised surgery as the best option. I’ll continue supporting my team and working to elevate women’s basketball.”

During the 2025 WNBA season, Collier experienced multiple ankle injuries. She hurt her ankle on August 2 in a 111-58 victory against the Las Vegas Aces and missed three weeks, resulting in her sitting out 11 games which affected the MVP race, ultimately won by Aja Wilson, with Collier as runner-up.

Despite injuries, Collier achieved an impressive 50-40-90 shooting record for the season—shooting 50% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 90% from free throws—a rare feat matched only by Elena Delle Don.

In the WNBA semifinals Game 3 against the Phoenix Mercury, Collier endured a Grade 2 tear damaging three ankle ligaments and a shin muscle after colliding with Alyssa Thomas. Initially, Collier intended to avoid surgery and focused on rehab, aiming to return by January. However, surgery became necessary.

With Collier out, Golden State forward Temi Fagbenle, who recently signed a multi-year deal, will join the Lunar Owls for the upcoming season. The Unrivaled season kicks off on January 5th, with the Lunar Owls playing Rose at 8 PM ET.

Fan Take: Napheesa Collier’s absence is a significant setback for both the Lynx and WNBA fans who admire her phenomenal talent and competitive spirit. Her recovery and return will be closely watched, as her presence on the court is crucial for raising the game’s visibility and inspiring the next generation of players.
