Newcastle United are reportedly interested in AS Roma’s Brazilian defender Wesley Franca.
AS Roma Live reports that the 22-year-old has attracted the attention of Premier League clubs, with Newcastle sending scouts to keep an eye on him. The Italian club signed the Brazilian defender in the summer for a transfer fee of around 25 million euros, doubling his valuation. Newcastle will have to pay €50 million if they want to sign the 22-year-old wing-back.
Wesley is capable of playing both sides and could be a good whistleblower in the long run. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle are prepared to go broke for him.
Wesley has been linked with moves to Everton and Brighton in the past. Arsenal also wanted to sign Wesley during his time at Flamengo.
Can Newcastle convince Wesley Franca?
Newcastle already have players like Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall at their disposal. It will be interesting to see how they adapt the Brazilian into their starting lineup. The 22-year-old would not want to sit on the bench at a Premier League club. He needs guaranteed game time, but it remains to be seen whether Newcastle can offer him that.
Newcastle could use Wesley
There is no doubt that we need more quality and depth in our squad and the 22-year-old is a quality player. However, in order to get him to join the club, he must be given an important role in the team.
Newcastle aim to build a strong team for the future and want to compete regularly for major trophies. Signing an elite young talent would be a step in the right direction. However, 50 million euros is a lot of money and it remains to be seen how things will turn out.
