PFL Founder Don Davis Takes on Joe Rogan’s Claim: Can Fighters Really Reach Elite Status Only in the UFC?

Joe Rogan has clearly struck a nerve with PFL founder Don Davis, who responded strongly to Rogan’s assertion that UFC fighters are superior. Rogan, a controversial comedian and long-time UFC Octagon commentator, insists that true greatness in MMA can only be proven by competing in the UFC, the sport’s premier league.

Don Davis, however, argues that the PFL is now a co-leader in the MMA world, especially after surpassing Bellator in 2024. He fired back at Rogan by highlighting several high-profile fighters who have chosen to compete in the PFL instead of the UFC.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Rogan stated that to be considered the best in MMA, a fighter must prove themselves in the UFC Octagon. He acknowledged the value of winning PFL tournaments and the financial security it provides fighters but stressed that true recognition comes from competing in the UFC.

This stance did not sit well with Don Davis, who shared a list of prominent fighters—such as Francis Ngannou, Dakota Ditcheva, Cris Cyborg, Usman Nurmagomedov, Corey Anderson, and Paul Hughes—who have chosen the PFL or Bellator over the UFC. Many of these athletes have proven their elite status, with some having achieved UFC championship success before moving on.

Davis pointed out that Nemkov follows his mentor Fedor Emelianenko’s path outside the UFC, challenging Rogan’s claim. He suggested that many top MMA fighters are now competing in the PFL, contradicting Rogan’s assertion that UFC is the sole proving ground for MMA excellence.

Fan Take: This clash highlights a shifting landscape in MMA, where alternative leagues like the PFL are gaining legitimacy and attracting top talent. For fans, this could mean more competitive depth and exciting matchups beyond the UFC, potentially changing how greatness is defined in the sport.
