Russell Westbrook Overtakes Oscar Robertson to Claim Title as Top Scoring Point Guard Ever

Russell Westbrook has secured a new milestone in NBA history. On Friday, he scored his 26,711th career point, surpassing Oscar Robertson to become the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history. Robertson had held the record with 26,710 points.

In the game, Westbrook posted 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, along with nine rebounds, six assists, and four turnovers, though the Sacramento Kings fell 129-102 to the Phoenix Suns. Westbrook already leads the league in career triple-doubles and guard rebounds. He is seventh all-time in assists and is likely to move into fifth place this season, surpassing Mark Jackson and Steve Nash.

While this point guard scoring record is unofficial, it highlights Westbrook’s place among elite scorers. Among the 14 players ranked above him in career points, only three are guards: Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and James Harden. Jordan and Bryant are classic shooting guards, while Harden has played more of a combo guard role.

Since leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook has become something of a veteran journeyman. Currently signed to a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Kings, he ranks fourth on the team with an average of 14.4 points per game—his best scoring rate since the 2022-23 season. On Friday, Westbrook’s field goal percentage dropped to 42.3%, his lowest since 2010, but he compensated with a career-best 35.3% from beyond the arc.

This moment also marks the fading of Oscar Robertson’s well-known record, recently eclipsed by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s dominant performance, which reminded fans of the sport’s evolving greatness.

Fan Take: Westbrook’s achievement is a testament to his relentless drive and versatility on the court, making him an enduring figure in NBA history. For basketball fans, it highlights the evolving nature of the game and the impressive longevity of players who continue to redefine records and expectations.
