Filip Broberg’s inclusion on Sweden’s men’s hockey team for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina was unexpected by many early critics. The St. Louis Blues defenseman, now 24, defied the odds and earned his first selection to represent Sweden at the Olympic level.

Following a recent 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights, Broberg expressed his excitement and honor at the opportunity, revealing he learned of his selection through a call from coach Sam Hallam just days prior.

Joining him on the roster are notable Swedish NHL players like Victor Hedman, Rasmus Dahlin, Erik Karlsson, and others. While some veterans such as Mattias Ekholm and Hampus Lindholm were absent from the initial list, Broberg’s selection reflects his standout performance this season.

Blues manager Jim Montgomery praised Sweden’s history of producing elite defensemen and highlighted Broberg’s growth. This season, Broberg played 42 games, averaging over 23 minutes per game with 13 points, and has been particularly noted for his defensive improvements and mindset development.

Acquired from the Edmonton Oilers along with forward Dylan Holloway in August 2024, Broberg set goals before the season that included this Olympic milestone. He’s eager to contribute and compete alongside his talented Swedish teammates.

While his exact role in the tournament remains to be seen, Broberg is likely to be a key player, especially in defensive situations during the opener against Italy. He emphasized his focus on becoming a tough, physical defender who can also create offensive opportunities.

Hailing from Örebro, Sweden, Broberg draws inspiration from Swedish hockey legends like Nicklas Lidstrom and is now creating his own Olympic memories.
