It’s a Girl! Gainesway’s G1 Champion Moot Welcomes His First Filly Offspring

The first foal sired by multiple Grade 1 winner Moose was welcomed into the world on January 1 at Gainesway Ranch in Lexington, Kentucky. This colt, a striking white blaze mare, was born early on New Year’s Day at 2:30 a.m. and is out of Marlinspike, a winning mare by Tapit. The filly is a half-sister to Barrett, a multiple stakes winner.

Marlinspike descends from Surfside, the 2000 champion 3-year-old filly who notably triumphed over older colts in the Clark Handicap (G2). As a broodmare at both Overbrook Farm and Gainesway, she has produced or is related to top performers including G1 winner Jill Zahl and G3 winners Irish Surf and High Celebrity.

Brian Graves, Gainesway’s general manager, expressed great enthusiasm about the first Moose foals, praising the filly’s excellent conformation, including long legs, a graceful neck, sloping shoulders, and well-developed hips. He believes that this colt gives a promising glimpse into Moose’s future as a stallion.

Moose is a son of Good Magic, a celebrated racehorse who claimed victories in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) as a 2-year-old and the Arkansas Derby (G1) as a 3-year-old, earning over $1.5 million. Notably, Moose is the only stallion retiring in 2025 to have been a Grade 1 winner at both two and three years of age.

Bred by Don Alberto Cope, Moose is out of the Uncle Mo mare Hoppa. He was sold for $2 million at the 2023 OBS March 2-Year-Old Horse Training Sale to Donato Rani of Zedan Racing. Moose comes from a distinguished bloodline that includes champion Rollout the Carpet and G1 winner War Command.

During his debut season as a stallion in 2025, Moose attracted significant attention, covering 185 mares across North America. He is set to stand at Gainesway in 2026 with a stud fee of $30,000.

Fan Take: This news is thrilling for horse racing enthusiasts as it marks the beginning of a new chapter for a promising stallion whose pedigree and early foal quality suggest significant impact on the sport’s future. Moose’s success could bring fresh excitement and elevate breeding programs, potentially shaping the next generation of champions.
