In golf, the little things are just as important as the big things. Sometimes, details you haven’t thought about, such as the height of your tee, can have the biggest impact. It may seem simple, but it can make or break your day on the course.

To set yourself up for success, here’s everything you need to know to prepare properly. There are three tee heights to consider.

1. Driver

Many amateurs tee up these shots too low, but there is an easy way to check. When placing the peg on the ground, make sure that when the driver head is placed on the ground, about half of the ball is at the top of the driver head, just above the crown.

With the driver, you want to catch the ball on the upswing. In addition to this, placing the ball slightly in front of your stance will help the club come up and catch the ball in the sweet spot. This is the contact you need to maximize your smash factor, resulting in drives that are more consistent and fly farther.

2. Fairway woods and hybrids

The optimal tee height for these clubs is when the ball sits slightly above the top of the club when it rests on the ground. A common mistake is teeing the ball too high thinking it will improve the launch of the ball. However, if it is too high, there is a risk of it flying out. With this simple gauge, you’ll always have a clean catch.

3. Iron

Unlike the driver, iron shots are basically hit from the bottom. The ball should be teeed low to about the same height as the grass. If your fingers go under the tee, your fingers may be too high and you may be catching too high on the face, causing poor contact. These three simple keys promise to help you find your sweet spot more often.
