Tottenham Hotspur are looking to raise money in the January transfer window, with the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35m already underscoring their focus on improving their final third.

There has been a significant lack of creativity and enthusiasm at Tottenham this season, with Thomas Frank yet to establish a framework for securing wealth compared to Brentford at G-Tech, emerging from the Championship in 2021 and having endured four comfortable seasons in the Dane’s system.

Spurs certainly need a winger, but with Dominic Solanke struggling for fitness all year and Richarlison having been up and down in front of goal, the number nine leaves a lot to be desired.

Spurs could sign striker in January

ENIC Group provided Frank with the funding to close a number of contracts this winter. They have continued to make strides defensively in recent weeks, but Spurs’ offense has not been meshing at all.

Creativity has certainly waned, but the No. 9 goal-scoring options don’t seem to have much confidence, with Solanke, Richarlison and loanee Randal Kolo Muani paleing in comparison to Harry Kane. He is the club’s top scorer, but there is no need to mention that.

Tottenham are in for the long haul and Porto’s Sam Agehowa could be the perfect up-and-coming forward to take Frank’s project forward. According to Caught Offside, the Spaniard remains on the Londoners’ list following interest last year, but his employers are unwilling to sell him midway through the campaign.

Sam, who is worth £87m, has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting and prolific attacking players over the past year and a half, with Chelsea and Manchester United among the top clubs who have also shown interest recently.

What Sam brings to Spurs

Sam scored a number of goals for Porto last season and journalist Zac Lowy said he had the potential to become “one of Europe’s best strikers”.

Sam, who grew up in Spain, joined Porto from Atletico Madrid in 2024 after coming close to a move to Stamford Bridge and a deal with Chelsea. That might have been a mistake. While remaining in Iberian territory, he honed his qualities and developed into a complete forward.

With that in mind, could the 21-year-old be the next Kane?

Replacing England’s captain will be a difficult task for the Lilywhites, but Sam could be the right man to replace the world-class ace currently leading Bayern Munich’s ambitious project.

Kane is a superstar and has been N17’s marquee player for years. Solanke and others all have notable attributes, but none can match Kane’s depth and consistency, and that’s where Sam could come in.

Strong, tall and tenacious, Sam appears to have specialized in Premier League football, especially now that he’s riding the crest of a wave with Porto, scoring nine goals in 14 appearances in the Europa League and 28 goals in 44 appearances in Portugal’s top flight.

This is far better than the effort of Solanke, who has only made two Premier League appearances this season. His Spurs career has been marred by injuries, but Frank and his mates will need to continue to be relentless to ensure they don’t continue to flatter teams to deceive them.

He’s not just a flashy goalscorer. According to data platform FBref, Sam ranks in the top 16% of strikers in Portugal Liga this year for shot-creating actions and in the top 5% for successful take-offs per 90.

A successful take-on is recorded when a player, while still in possession of the ball, directly carries the ball and defeats his opponent.

Last year he played more of a target man role, but now his physicality, athleticism and dynamism are allowing him to grow.

In this respect, he has something in common with Kane. Kane is one of the most formidable frontmen of his generation, but also an extremely unique individual with the vision of a natural number 10 and the intelligence of an elite midfield general.

As we all know, it’s not easy to replace a centre-forward in Kane’s position, but Sam has it all and has what it takes to be a Premier League superstar.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in a star player who could become the next Son Heung-min.
