Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rolle led his side to their first Old Firm win on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Celtic at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues needed to come back and grab the three points after Yang Hyun-joong’s opening goal, but thanks to two goals from Youssef Cermiti and one goal from Mikey Moore, they got the three points.

Of course, there were many positives to take from such a great result, but there are still things that need to be addressed in the January transfer window.

Why Rangers need to sign a creative midfielder

The Scottish giants still need to be in the market to sign a new attacking midfielder, or at least a central midfielder with attacking qualities, to strengthen their squad this month.

Thero Asgord started as an attacking midfielder in Rangers’ 4-2-3-1 formation with Moore on the left and Jady Gassama on the right, but struggled for the first 45 minutes.

The Norway international had been warned that he would pull Luke McCowan back after a nasty touch by the Scottish midfielder in midfield saw Rohr react and send him off at half-time.

Asgord has improved in form with two goals and one assist in his last three league games, but there are still question marks over his consistency and ability in big games, especially after his disastrous performance against Celtic.

That’s why Rangers should rush to bring in another option for the number 10 position come January, and not rely solely on the former Luton star’s stability.

Rangers should sign midfielder to replace Thero Asgord

Late last month, it was reported that Rangers were one of the teams interested in signing Tromsø central midfielder Jens Geert Dahl, who is valued at around £5 million.

Rangers Journal author and analyst Kai Watson described the 20-year-old star as “one of Norway’s greatest talents” and claimed it would be a “huge coup” for the club to land him a contract this month.

His performance at the Eliteserien in 2025 suggests he is an exciting young talent, as Watson claimed, and could come in as an upgrade to what Asgård offered to the Gers.

According to Sofascore, the £5m star started 28 league games for Tromsø last year, scoring four goals and providing four assists, with 1.3 successful dribbles and 5.1 duels won per game.

Like Aasgoat, Geert-Dahl is a right-footed midfielder who usually plays on the left side of midfield and is able to step in with his right foot in and around the box. This is evidenced by the 2025 Eliteserien heatmap (via SofaScore) below.

Despite being young and inexperienced, the Norwegian talent produced consistent quality with goals and assists for Tromsø last season, which is more than Asgaard was given credit for at Rangers this season.

As you can see from the table above, the 6-foot-4 midfielder was one of the most impressive midfielders in the league in terms of scoring and goal creation.

While his return of 4 goals from 5.93 xG may seem poor at face value, his 5.85 xG shots on target suggests he was having quality shots and was unfortunately met with quality saves, so this is more a case of him being unlucky than poor finishing skills.

Meanwhile, according to FotMob, Ursagaard has not ranked higher than the top 26% for goals or assists in this season’s Premiership, which speaks to the difference in quality between the two players.

This suggests that Hjert-Dahl could start as a regular in Asgaard’s midfield, playing either as an attacking midfielder or on the left of the midfield three.

Tavernier 2.0: Rolle wants Dan Purdy to sign ‘perfect’ £2m star with Rangers

Rangers are reportedly considering signing a star player who could become James Tavanier 2.0 at Ibrox.

That doesn’t mean the Norwegian’s career at Ibrox should be over, as he has shown some positive signs recently, but it will give him real competition and a poor performance could mean he doesn’t feature regularly.
