Ex-UFC Title Contender Knocked Out in Octagon Debut, Years Ahead of Matching Conor McGregor’s Legendary Feat

On this day in 2015, a UFC star’s debut did not unfold as expected.

In 2025, fighters like Joe Rogan-approved Ateba Gauthier had remarkable debut years inside the UFC. It will be intriguing to watch how he and other emerging talents such as Kevin Vallejos develop in 2026 after making a strong entrance into the Octagon. However, being ready for the UFC doesn’t guarantee immediate success when competing under the intense spotlight. This was true for the fighter who has since become a staple on the roster, debuting the same night Jon Jones defeated Daniel Cormier.

Top UFC newcomers of 2025 included Quilan Salkild, who achieved 3 wins with 2 finishes and earned 2 bonuses; Ateba Gauthier, with 3 wins and 2 bonuses; Kevin Vallejos, with 3 wins and 2 finishes; David Martinez, with 2 wins; and Malcolm Wellmaker, with 2 wins and 2 finishes.

Jared Cannonier, now a veteran with 20 appearances, saw his undefeated streak end during his UFC debut at UFC 182 in 2015. Although returning from a loss, his 2025 victory over Gregory Rodriguez proved that he remains a formidable competitor. Cannonier initially fought as a heavyweight but found his success primarily in the middleweight division. Despite an early first-round knockout loss, he later transitioned to light heavyweight and middleweight, joining Conor McGregor as the only fighters with knockouts across three UFC weight classes.

His opponent in that debut, Sean Jordan, surprised many with an unconventional hook kick followed by a knockout punch. Jordan’s striking also notably hurt Derrick Lewis in a subsequent fight, marking one of his biggest career wins. Jordan, a 10-fight UFC veteran, is also known for twice defeating Ruiz on the local circuit in 2010.

Fan Take: This look back highlights how even the most talented fighters can stumble early on, underscoring that resilience and adaptability are crucial for long-term success in the UFC. For fans, it’s a reminder that breakout stars of today, like those from 2025, could reshape the sport’s future with their evolving skills and perseverance.
