Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo Dominate 2026 NBA All-Star Game Voting Spotlight

The 2026 NBA All-Star Game will introduce a new format featuring two U.S. teams competing against one international team in a round-robin style, with each game lasting 12 minutes. Each squad will consist of at least eight players, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stepping in to assign additional players if the fan voting doesn’t produce three full teams, which will be divided into 16 Americans and eight international players. A notable change in this year’s voting is the elimination of the backcourt and frontcourt player distinction, leading to some surprising fan voting results.

Following the initial fan vote, Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo emerged as top contenders, with Doncic currently leading in total votes, narrowly ahead of Antetokounmpo. Nikola Jokic closely follows them, and these top three vote-getters will represent the national team. On the Eastern ballot, the new voting method favored guards, with Tyrese Maxey, Jalen Brunson, and Cade Cunningham each receiving over one million votes, and Donovan Mitchell securing fifth place with over 851,000 votes.

One interesting aspect of this format is the relatively small size of the U.S. frontcourt, which is dominated by wings like Kevin Durant, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Jaylen Johnson, Michael Porter Jr., and Brandon Ingram. Conversely, the national team boasts big names such as Antetokounmpo, Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, Karl-Anthony Towns, Alperen Sengun, Pascal Siakam, and Deni Avdija, but currently only has two top guards in Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

As the final roster adjustments unfold, with starters and coaches selecting reserves based on votes from fans, media, and players, it appears the U.S. teams will lean heavily on guards, while the international team will have a deeper roster.

Fan Take: This innovative All-Star format ushers in a fresh and exciting dynamic, potentially redefining how teams are built and compete in the NBA’s showcase event. Basketball fans should be excited to see diverse player matchups and more international talent shine on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
