Luka Doncic and LeBron James Power Lakers’ Stunning Comeback Victory Over Grizzlies Once More

The Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies faced off on Sunday night, two days before their next match at Crypto.com Arena, in what resembled a playoff showdown. The Lakers had secured a win in the first game on Friday and anticipated a fierce challenge from the Grizzlies, even without their star guard Ja Morant, who was sidelined due to a strained right calf.

The intensity from the Grizzlies was evident as they led by 16 points in the second quarter. However, the Lakers, led by standout performances from Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Jake Laravia, rallied to win 120-114, extending their clutch game winning streak to 12. Doncic was just shy of a triple-double, scoring 36 points along with nine rebounds and eight assists. James contributed 26 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds, while Laravia, starting for the absent Rui Hachimura, notched 26 points, five rebounds, and four assists, marking his second consecutive year scoring over 20 points.

The game was tightly contested, with multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter. The Lakers finally took a crucial 100-99 lead on a basket by Doncic, followed by James’ 3-point play and free throws that put them ahead 104-99 with just under four minutes left. The Lakers maintained their composure against Grizzlies’ pushes, with Doncic’s successive 3-pointers giving them a decisive nine-point lead in the final moments.

Despite the unusual back-to-back schedule against the same opponent, Lakers coach JJ Redick embraced it, comparing it to a mini playoff series and seeing it as a valuable growth opportunity. Redick emphasized improving the team’s defense and quickening their transitions to limit the Grizzlies’ offensive chances. Additionally, he aimed to boost center Deandre Ayton, who had been underperforming recently. Ayton responded well, scoring 15 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and blocking three shots.

The Lakers’ ability to adapt and perform in clutch moments signals a promising season ahead, potentially setting the stage for deeper playoff contention and memorable rivalries.
