  • Manchester United have genuine interest in Ruben Neves
  • The Portuguese midfielder has experience in the Premier League

Manchester United are reportedly considering a return to the Premier League for Ruben Neves, with new developments suggesting a deal could be considered as early as the January transfer window.

According to Football Insider, influential super agent Jorge Mendes is using his long-standing connections at Old Trafford to actively explore the possibility of a winter move as United look to strengthen their midfield options.

Neves, who currently plays for Al Hilal in the Saudi Professional League, has been on the radar of United for several years, dating back to his impressive spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His composure on the ball, elite passing range and ability to dictate the tempo made him one of the Premier League’s most respected midfielders during his time at Molineux, and United’s recruiters never completely lost sight of his profile.

Manchester United have genuine interest in Ruben Neves

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has added weight to the speculation by confirming to Football Insider that United continue to praise the Portugal international.

Wyness revealed that United are closely monitoring Neves’ development in Saudi Arabia and are aware that he could be used as part of a restructuring of Saudi football.

‘Manchester United are definitely keeping an eye on Ruben Neves’ he told Football Insider.

“They have been following him for a number of years since his time at Wolves, they know him well and they continue to monitor how he is doing in Saudi Arabia.

“They have now been informed of his possible availability and his representatives have been in touch.

“He has strong links with United so he’s not the only player he’s shortlisted in the last few games. We all know they want a midfielder.”

United’s renewed interest comes as the club is reassessing its midfield balance under manager Ruben Amorim.

While young targets remain the priority in the long term, Neves is seen as an off-the-shelf solution who brings leadership, tactical discipline and experience right away.

His familiarity with the Premier League would greatly reduce adaptation risk, a key consideration for a January deal.

But a move to Old Trafford will not be easy. United are expected to face competition from Newcastle United and Tottenham, with both teams monitoring Neves’ situation closely as they look to improve control and quality in their midfield.

For Neves himself, a return to England remains an attractive prospect. Despite being a key figure in Saudi Arabia, the 28-year-old has previously spoken of his love for English football and a return to the Premier League would allow him to compete at Europe’s highest level again.
