Sean O’Malley Reverses Course on Retirement Just Weeks After UFC 324 Comeback

Former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley is set to make his return to the Octagon on January 24th at UFC 324, where he’ll face off against China’s Song Yadong. O’Malley last competed on June 7th in a bantamweight title rematch with Merab Dvalishvili but was submitted in the third round. Following Dvalishvili’s unexpected loss of the title to Petr Yan at the end of 2025, O’Malley has expressed enthusiasm about his new chapter and has even mentioned wanting a rematch with Yan for the belt. However, shortly after jokingly proposing a fight with Yan at the White House lawn, O’Malley made a surprising announcement hinting that 2026 might be his final year competing.

The bantamweight division is opening up once again after the title changed hands, and O’Malley could significantly benefit if he defeats Song. Still, regardless of the outcome against Song, O’Malley revealed on his YouTube channel that he plans to retire by the end of 2026. He conveyed that after taking care of Song and possibly another bout with Petr Yan, he intends to have fun before stepping away from the sport. O’Malley hinted at a potential 2-0 record in 2026 but underscored that if things don’t go well, it might be time for him to retire.

Though it might seem unusual for someone as young as 31 to retire, O’Malley has been a consistent presence in the bantamweight scene since 2018 and has achieved a great deal. As he explores opportunities beyond MMA, the idea of retiring while at the top of his game is increasingly plausible. For a popular star like O’Malley, leaving the sport on a high note could be the perfect exit strategy.

Fan Take: Sean O’Malley’s possible retirement is huge news for fight fans as it signals the potential loss of one of the sport’s most exciting personalities. His decision will not only impact the bantamweight division’s landscape but also highlight the evolving careers of fighters balancing life inside and beyond the Octagon.
